3 Terrible Reasons Why People Drink & Drive

Drunk driving is not only illegal in Texas, but it creates a serious risk of hurting people out on the road. Nonetheless, thousands of Texas drink and drive each year. Their reasons vary. Some admittedly have no idea what they’re doing, but our Houston DWI lawyers have heard some crazy excuses. Below are 3 top reasons people make the terrible decision to drink and drive.

They Do Not Believe They Are Impaired

We hear this often. “I can still drive safely after a few drinks.” However, studies have shown otherwise. After only two alcohol beverages, a motorist experiences impairment with judgment, vision, and multi-tasking. Alcohol may even alter someone’s mood. And this is only after 2 drinks. Add a third drink, and motorists will experience problems steering or responding to sudden emergencies. They might not even be able to see moving vehicles clearly.

Of course, some people might show less effects of alcohol, especially alcoholics. In any event, you can be convicted of DWI no matter how well you handle your liquor. If your blood alcohol concentration is over the limit, you can face DWI charges. It’s that simple.

They Feel Peer Pressure

Young people who drink and drive often feel pressure from their peers. There’s a reason Texas prohibits anyone under 21 from buying alcohol. By that point, many people can handle peer pressure and simply refuse to drink. But younger drivers, especially teens, might want to show off to their friends that they can take risks.

Unfortunately, an underage motorist caught for drunk driving could lose their license as well as face other penalties. Insurance premiums are likely to skyrocket as well. It’s best to get a new group of friends rather than run the risk of a collision while drunk.

They Are Escaping an Argument

Alcohol often leads to arguments. And when a fight escalates in intensity, many people want to get away, so they pick up the keys and start driving. Sadly, this is the wrong choice.

We appreciate that many people need to get away from someone they are fighting with, especially if the fight is getting physical. But it is better to run away on foot and then call a taxi or Uber or else take public transportation to get somewhere safe. Driving even short distances while intoxicated is a danger, especially since most car accidents happen close to home.

Furthermore, an argument can reduce your ability to focus if you are still thinking about what was said. Distracted driving and drunk driving are a deadly combination, and there is a real chance you will strike a pedestrian or motorist, possibly causing serious injuries. Now you face enhanced criminal charges for assault.
